Transition town Midleton

What are Transition Towns?

Transition Towns are a new and rapidly growing popular response to the real challenges of Climate Change and Peak Oil. It embodies a move to complement work at the national and global level of governmental and intergovernmental bodies with meaningful local action. The Transition Town movement harnesses the existing knowledge, experience and skills of communities to prepare and plan for a future beyond cheap energy and irresponsible carbon use.

Where did the idea come from?

Transition Town Midleton follows closely on a number of other Irish initiatives; the birth of the Transition idea being in Kinsale, County Cork. The movement is now international and evolving at a surprising pace. We welcome the emergence of a Youghal Transition Group and look forward to working with Youghal in the future.

So what about Midleton?

Midleton has a small, about 6 or 7, group of people from different backgrounds who have been together since Spring 2008.

We are running a 2009 Programme to raise awareness on the climate change / peak oil situation in East Cork. Instead of being powerless in the face of impending change we can choose to be empowered in shaping our own destinies at a community level.

We are also actively promoting the development of local food production and the uptake of local allotment initiatives, see grow your own for more details.

We aim to keep this website up to date with our events and activities to date; see the story so far and feel free to make comments or give suggestions on what we could do in the future.
