GRow your own
One of The Transition Town Group’s aims is to promote local food production. We expect that Midleton of the future will be relying more on locally produced food from East Cork farms, allotments, garden vegetable patches and even window boxes!
Most of us will never produce enough for our own needs year round but we can achieve limitless satisfaction trying. At present their are two private providers offering allotments; Ightermurragh Garden Allotments, Ladysbridge and on the other side of Midleton, Siobhan and David Barry of Ballintubber Farm. Contact details for both are below.
Our autumn / winter programme kicked off on Saturday 13th September at the Midleton Food Festival. We had a great site and some fine weather. We were delighted to have Thomas and his crew from www.irishallotments.net with us for the day. Liam Murphy from Ightermurragh Garden Allotments also brought along a great display of produce and was available to talk to anyone interested in growing their own.
Since then we have had two successful ‘Grow your own’ talks in the Midleton Library in February and March with Michael Brennock and Susan Turner respectively giving excellent advice on what we should be doing in the garden. Many thanks to them, to the people who attended and to Midleton Library for supporting these events.

Update on Allotments / Community Garden
Together with the VEC, the National Learning Network, SECAD, the Irish Wheelchair Association and the Back to Education Initiative, Midleton Transition Group have written a proposal for the establishment of a horticultural project, incorporating a taught course with FETAC accreditation, allotments and a community garden for Midleton. This proposal has been sent to Cork County Council with a request to secure a suitable site.
We would be delighted to hear from private landowners in the vicinity of Midleton who would consider leasing a site for the purpose; email ;
